Magha Mela

This Magha mela is one of the prominent and colorful festivals of Konark. This is an event where there is grand congregating of Indian pilgrims and enthusiasts from abroad. This mela falls on the 7th day of the bright half of 'Magha' and is usually celebrated in the month of January-February. During this time, the Indian pilgrims take holy dips in the Chandrabhaga Tirtha. This is near the sea and people welcome the Sun God with prayers in the early morning.

The Magha Mela is celebrated each year. It is being said that when the Sun enters Capricorn on the New Moon in the Month Magh, the Planet Jupiter stays in the star Aquarius and this happens every 12 years. This is considered to be auspicious and is celebrated all over India. This is more so at the confluence of the rivers Ganga (Ganges), Yamuna and the invisible Saraswati at Prayag (Allahabad).

The Maha Kumbh-Mela takes place every 12 years. The recent one was to be at the confluence of the rivers Ganges and Yamuna and the Saraswati, at Prayag in Allahabad. The river Saraswati is an underground river and the ancient Hindu Name for this place was known as Prayag. The Muslim rulers re-named it to Allahabad.
